A VPN (a virtual private network) is one of the best tools you (and your business) can use to help protect yourself on the internet. It can help you keep your data safe from hackers. How? It creates a secure connection between your computer and a server run by your VPN provider, like Nord VPN, that hides your online activity from anyone monitoring your Internet connection. Your internet traffic is encrypted, so no one can see what sites you’re visiting or what files you’re transferring.

If you’re unfamiliar with technology, installing and setting up a VPN can be daunting. Have no fear! That’s why I’m here. To teach you how to set up your new VPN – fast and efficiently!

What You’ll Learn:

Virtual Private Network (VPN) Basics

Before we dive into the installation and configuration instructions, I think it’s important first to discuss some of the basics of VPNs. What is a VPN? How does it keep your information safe? Let’s find out!

What is a virtual private network?

A virtual private network, or VPN, is a tool that keeps you safe online. It encrypts your data and sends it through a secure connection to another location. This way, even if someone intercepts your data, they won’t be able to read it.

VPNs are handy when using public Wi-Fi networks (like at the coffee shop) because hackers can easily break into these networks and steal your information. But with a VPN, they won’t be able to access your data because it’s encrypted.

How does a VPN work?

When you connect to a VPN, your network traffic is routed through the VPN server instead of directly to the internet. No one can see what you’re doing online—not even your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Furthermore, it makes it much harder to track which sites you visit or what data you send or receive from them.

Why should I use a VPN?

There are many reasons one would want to use a virtual private network. I’ve listed the top three reasons as follows:

The encryption provided by most VPNs means you can browse without worrying about others spying on your activity or intercepting any data sent over an insecure connection. The best providers offer no logging policies—meaning they don’t keep any records of what users do online—and strong 2048-bit encryption so that no one can hack into your connection (including government agencies).

A VPN provider will encrypt all traffic between your device and the internet, including all data sent between websites or apps on your phone or computer and web pages accessed while browsing on public Wi-Fi networks at coffee shops, restaurants, airports, etc. This ensures that even if someone snooped around trying to figure out what sites/apps are being used on public Wi-Fi, they wouldn’t be able to see anything useful due to encryption; they’d only see “garbage” characters instead of actual text or pictures.

Suppose you want to access content restricted by your local laws or blocked in your region. For example, if you’re traveling abroad, you might want access to US-based streaming services like Netflix—but they won’t work on some hotel Wi-Fi networks without a VPN. That’s where a VPN comes in! You can use them to get around censorship laws or geo-blocks on content such as movies and TV shows by connecting through a server in another country.

Install NordVPN – A Beginner’s Guide to Set Up a Virtual Private Network

Now that we’ve gone over the basics of what a VPN is, how it works, and why you should buy one, let’s get down to the good stuff; installing it and seeing what this baby can do! If you haven’t yet purchased a VPN, I’m going to suggest my all-time favorite one! It’s called Nord VPN, and it’s the best VPN available today.

Why? It’s simple to set up and configure. It’s affordable (did I mention my link has a special 68% off discount and three months free!?!) And, they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so if for some crazy reason you don’t like it (which I highly doubt will happen), you can quickly return it and get every penny back.

If you want to give it a shot, go ahead and click the button below and grab that discount I was telling you about. We’ll start at step one, purchasing Nord VPN.

If you want to install it into a different folder than the default folder selected, go ahead and do so at this point in the installation (the popup box will prompt you to choose a folder to install Nord VPN into). After selecting a folder (or leaving it as is), click “next.”

Next, it will ask if you want to create a desktop shortcut and a “start menu” shortcut. Check the boxes of the shortcuts you want to make and click “next.”

We’re now ready to install! Click “install.”

When it’s done installing, it will show two empty checkboxes that say “Launch Nord VPN” and “Install Nord Pass.” NordPass comes free with Nord VPN, which is an exceptional deal! Nord Pass is on my list as one of my all-time essential security must-haves for keeping yourself safe online. I highly recommend taking advantage of this fantastic feature and installing this password manager to keep yourself even more protected on the internet and your devices.

Step 3: Choose your location (optional)

There’s not much you need to do as far as changing settings is concerned. That’s one of the great things about Nord VPN. They make it super easy for anyone to install and start using ASAP.

After it’s installed and you check the checkbox for the program to open, a screen showing a map of the United States (or whichever country you’re located in) will appear. This shows where you’re connected to. To change countries, for example, to select Ireland as our location, select the dropdown menu and click on Ireland. It’s that easy.

Step 4: Configure Settings

To set up Nord VPN after installation, there’s not a whole lot that needs to be done, to be honest! It’s pretty much all set to go after installing it. There are some settings to turn on, but nothing hard to do. I’ll show you how to configure those now.

An important setting I like to configure for convenience is the auto-connect to VPN setting so that whenever I log on to my computer, I don’t have to connect to my VPN manually. It’ll automatically connect for me.

Settings —> General —> First option

To configure auto-connect, select the Settings tab at the bottom left-hand corner of the VPN screen. Next, select the first option, General Settings. Then, toggle the first option, Launch the App at Windows Startup.

Voila! You’ve set your virtual private network to auto-connect.

Final Settings to Configure

Other configurable settings include Threat Protection, Meshnet, and Dark Web Monitoring.

Meshnet - How to Install NordVPN - Morgan Dubie

With Meshnet, you can set up a private network that allows you to connect your devices and access them from anywhere in the world. That means if you have a device in your home office or bedroom and another at work or on vacation, they’ll still be connected through your NordVPN account—and they’ll be safe from hackers and other online threats.

The added benefit of using Meshnet is that it allows you to send all your online traffic through another device. If someone is trying to track what you’re doing on the internet, they’ll see that information coming from a different IP address than yours.

Threat Protection - How to Install NordVPN - Morgan Dubie

With this feature, you can be confident that your data is safe from ads, trackers, and malware.

When you browse the web with NordVPN enabled, it will protect you from all of these threats, so you can enjoy a safer internet experience without worrying about what might be lurking behind the scenes. It’s also a powerful anti-malware (anti-virus) that scans your downloads for threats.

It is just a panel of toggle options you can run through and toggle on or off. So don’t worry about it being too confusing to figure out.

Dark Web Monitor - How to Install NordVPN - Morgan Dubie

Last but certainly not least, this is one of my favorite features offered by NordVPN because it’s not something everyone else offers. I’m talking about dark web monitoring. If you want to feel better knowing your personal information hasn’t been floating around the dark web, this feature is for you. They will send you alerts if any of your leaked data is found.
